Implicit learning deficit in children with Duchenne muscular dystrophy: Evidence for a cerebellar cognitive impairment?
نویسندگان
چکیده
This study aimed at comparing implicit sequence learning in individuals affected by Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy without intellectual disability and age-matched typically developing children. A modified version of the Serial Reaction Time task was administered to 32 Duchenne children and 37 controls of comparable chronological age. The Duchenne group showed a reduced rate of implicit learning even if in the absence of global intellectual disability. This finding provides further evidence of the involvement of specific aspects of cognitive function in Duchenne muscular dystrophy and on its possible neurobiological substrate.

Cyrulnik, S.C., and V.J. Hinton. Duchenne muscular dystrophy: A cerebellar disorder? NEUROSCI. BIOBEHAV. REV. Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a genetic disorder that is often associated with cognitive deficits. These cognitive deficits have been linked to the absence of dystrophin, a protein product which is normally found in multiple tissues throughout the body. In the current paper, we a...

OBJECTIVE Besides progressive muscle weakness cognitive deficits have been reported in patients with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). Cerebellar dysfunction has been proposed to explain cognitive deficits at least in part. In animal models of DMD disturbed Purkinje cell function has been shown following loss of dystrophin. Furthermore there is increasing evidence that the lateral cerebellum c...
متن کاملThe neurobiology of duchenne muscular dystrophy: learning lessons from muscle?
Several forms of inherited muscular dystrophy are associated with brain abnormalities and cognitive impairment. One of the most common and severe of these diseases is Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). Dystrophin, the product of the DMD gene, is found in neurones, where it is associated with the postsynaptic membrane. Cognitive impairment in individuals with DMD is thought to be due to an abnor...

The basis for cognitive impairment in Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is not well understood but may be related to abnormal expression of dystrophin in brain. The aim of this study was to determine whether regional brain glucose metabolism is altered in children with DMD and whether such metabolic disturbances are localized to regions shown to be normally rich in dystrophin expression. Ten bo...

Duchenne muscular dystrophy (BMD) is an inherited X-link disease. The incidence of this muscle-wasting disease is 1:5000 male live births. Mutation in the gene coding for dystrophin is the main cause of BMD. Most cases of this disease succumb to respiratory and cardiac failure in 3rd to 4th decades. The slow progression of BMD and recent achievement of gene therapies make it as an appropriate c...
